A planning application for the change of use of Wellington House to a hostel has been refused by Northumberland County Council.

The Wellington House building, on Wolsley Road, opposite the Flying Horse pub was previously a day care and out reach facility.

The planning application would have permitted internal alterations to allow 19 bedrooms across 2 floors.

Mass Public Objection from Blyth residents

According to the full report, 63 objections were received against the application from neighbouring residents
and members of the public. Concerns were raised regarding:

  • Increased crime and anti social behaviour
  • Overdevelopment of the site
  • Highway safety
  • Impact on amenity of nearby residents and future occupiers
  • Adverse impact on town centre
  • Existing facilities already available
