Armed response attended an incident in the Queen Street / Castle Terrace area of Ashington after a man was hit by a car then attacked with a blade.
A police helicopter was also deployed in the search for the assailant.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said:
"At about 3pm police received a report of disorder [...] in Ashington.
It was reported that a man has been involved in the altercation with the occupants of a vehicle before the vehicle has driven towards him and knocked him to the ground.
A man has then got out of the vehicle and assaulted the 29-year-old man before fleeing the scene in the car. Emergency services attended the area and the man was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a bladed article.
His injuries are not believed to be life threatening and he is in a stable condition in hospital.
This is being treated as an isolated incident between people who are known to each other and there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.
Inquiries to establish the circumstances around the incident, and locate the driver of the vehicle, are ongoing.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact police quoting log 676 24/07/20 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
