Local Brewer Quenches Blyth's Thirst
The Covid-19 situation has put pressure on all sectors of the British economy but one of the worse affected - and potentially slowest to recover - will be the licensed trade.
Pubs and bars face an uncertain future as government restrictions may require tables to be spaced out by 2 meters or more, and staff to serve drinks directly to tables adorned in protective face masks and gloves.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, we visited The Lounge - Blyth's newly opened Micropub on Simpson Street - to pick-up some liquid refreshment.
Locally Brewed Beers & Ciders
The Lounge is the exclusive outlet of Seaton Delaval-based microbrewery "Metalhead", who's range of beers and ciders have names inspired by famous rock music legends.
Owners Dave & Lydia appeared cheerful as ever while putting together our order of Axl Gold - The Lounge's flagship 4.8% strength golden ale.
A Range of Local Products
As well as their own bitters and porters, the bar also sells a range of bottled beers from other local suppliers, including the popular Hexham-based Allendale Brewery.
A range of Lilley's "real" ciders are also imported from Somerset.
Looking to the Future
Today, the bar area - which Dave has expertly hand-crafted from an old estate agent's shop - has been cleared of seating areas, and instead showcases all of The Lounge's products for takeaway orders only.
Dave and Lydia are confident that the restrictions will be lifted in good time, and that the Lounge can go back to trading as a pub, hopefully catching the end of the unseasonably warm summer that is expected to hit the North East.
The Lounge is located opposite Hank Marvin's (Sandwich Shop) on Simpson Street in Blyth and is open on Saturdays for walk-in collection.
Check The Lounge's Facebook page for the latest opening hours.
