£750,000 Boost for Blyth
Blyth will benefit from a £750,000 investment centred on the town’s main shopping area thanks to a Government scheme to respond to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.
We are one of more than 100 places chosen to receive a slice of an £80 million pot of funding brought forward from the £3.6 billion Towns Fund. The cash has been shared out to give areas a boost as they recover economically from Coronavirus
Bowes Street to Benefit
Blyth Valley Conservative MP, Ian Levy said:
“Bowes Street and the surrounding streets form a retail area with so much potential and some great businesses. But over a long period of time this northern gateway to the town centre has suffered from neglect with the public realm tired and in very poor condition.
In early summer I was asked by the Government for projects that were ‘shovel ready’ and could be brought forward as part of the Town Deal for Blyth. A scheme with Bowes Street at the heart was the obvious choice with funding not previously available to make improvements on this scale.
Once the Government funding was in place it allowed the County Council to develop and finalise the plans. This investment, the Future High Streets Fund bid and the progress on the Northumberland Line means there is much to look forward to in Blyth, and across the constituency in the coming months.”
Driving Economic Growth in Blyth
Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick said:
“This funding for Blyth will drive economic growth by supporting the town’s retail environment and will improve prospects for local communities.”
The funding is part of the Prime Minister’s ‘New Deal’ for Britain which includes £5 billion of projects that are being accelerated in order to deliver jobs, skills and new infrastructure to every corner of the country, in an effort to spur the nation’s economic recovery at this unprecedented time.T
